July 2007 Officer of the Month Officer Karrie Zieglemann: On July 20, 2007, at 7:50 p.m, Karie was on patrol and observed a vehicle being driven by a person that matched the description of a woman who had a warrant for her arrest. Karie turned her patrol vehicle around, checked the tag, and found the registered owner had a criminal arrest warrant for Animal Abandonment as she had expected. Karie stopped the car and took the 21-year-old woman into custody. On July 22, 2007, at 11:30 p.m., officers were dispatched to a domestic violence incident in progress on Marco Lake Drive. The first officers to arrive observed a vehicle flee the scene at a high rate of speed. The driver was involved in an assault and had been armed with a knife. They radioed a description of the car to other officers. Lt. Cliff Morine and Officer Ziegelmann observed a car matching that description on Heathwood Drive and when they attempted to stop the car, the driver disregarded their emergency lights and sirens and fled into a dead end cul-de-sac. Officer Zieglemann and Lt. Morine positioned their patrol vehicles to prevent the driver’s escape but the driver went into the swale, struck the driver’s side mirror of Officer Ziegelmann’s patrol vehicle, a mailbox and a parked car. The driver ignored the officers’ commands and attempted to flee from the passenger side door. Karie deployed her Taser, striking the suspect and incapacitating him. The 40-year-old man was taken into custody and charged with aggravated assault, battery, hit and run, resisting an officer and fleeing an officer. Karie’s quick thinking, coolness under pressure, and proficiency with the Taser, enabled officers to take this man into custody without significant injury. |
