April 2007 Officer of the Month

Corporal Jim Hassig:

On April 30th, Corporal Hassig was enroute home, after his shift, northbound on Highway I-75.  At approximately mile marker 106, Jim observed dirt and debris flying near the median directly in front of him.  As he approached the location, he saw a white pickup truck, badly damaged, in the median with debris and several injured parties scattered about.  It appeared that the truck had rolled over several times.  Jim observed one of the suspects dragging another from the driver’s side and was cradling him on the ground.

Jim stopped his car, immediately called for assistance on his police radio, and ran to render aid.  As a trained EMT, he first set about the task of triage, since there were five injured parties with severe injuries.  He conducted a cursory examination of each patient so that he could determine if any needed lifesaving aid, in order to direct the first arriving medics to the most severely injured.  Jim determined that three of the subjects were suffering from lacerations, bumps and bruises, while two others were semi-conscious with more serious injuries.

While Jim was rendering aid, a nurse stopped by and assisted him with monitoring the injured.  As the Fire Department personnel arrived, Jim directed them to the more seriously injured and quickly briefed them on the injuries of the others.

When Collier County Deputies and Florida Highway Patrol officers arrived, instead of leaving the scene, Jim remained and continued to assist further by obtaining information from the injured who spoke only Spanish.  Although Jim’s Spanish is very limited, he was able to obtain the necessary information and turn it over to the deputies.  The two most seriously injured patients were airlifted from the scene, while the others were transported by ambulance.

Jim’s dedication to duty and professionalism, even while off duty, is highly commendable.
