2006 July Officer of the Month Officer John Derrig:
On July 1st at 1:15 a.m. John was completing a traffic stop in the 700 block of North Collier Blvd. He noticed a man walking on the nearby side walk. The man was stumbling and making inaudible statements. John asked the man if there was a problem. While speaking to him, John noticed a bulge in the waistband of the man's shorts. The bulge was covered by the man's shirt and was the size and shape of a handgun. John approached the man and, for his protection, lifted the man's shirt revealing a black handgun. The man immediately pulled away. John disengaged from the armed man and covered him with his department-issued pistol, issued voice commands and called for back-up on his portable radio. Another officer arrived and secured the weapon. The 26-year-old Cape Coral man did not have the required permit and was taken into custody. A 9mm SIG Sauer pistol loaded with 13 rounds of ammunition was seized as evidence. A search found the man also illegally possessed a controlled substance, alprazolam ( Xanax). The man was charged with drug possession and carrying a concealed weapon. John exhibited great maturity in handling a highly stressful situation. |
